While watching the telly the other day, we caught the HSBC commercial that features traditional Chinese lanterns in the advertisement. It is a beautiful commercial, depicting the traditional use of sky lanterns quite well, including the audio portion going into detail about the lanterns. With so many adverts out there that are artsy, HSBC having a Chinese sky lantern related commercial came really as no surprise. The level of detail they took with everything, however, was truly impressive.

If you haven’t seen this advert, you owe it to yourself to watch it as it is truly a piece of art, worthy of award nominations as well as having the potential to go viral on the internet. The advert can be viewed here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WdUsxjoznA

In the video, traditional style sky lanterns are used, virtually identical to those sold at www.Nightskylantern.co.uk. We offer traditional lanterns in white as well as the red colour depicted in the advert but with a twist: All of our lanterns are 100% wire free. While a launch into a bay or other body of water makes the lack of wire less of an issue, the fact that they are wire-free means they will degrade quicker after they land. Our traditional white Chinese lanterns can be purchased here and the coloured version is available here.

The narration of the video is absolutely correct. The traditional use of Chinese Hanging Lanterns in China is to use them to send the hopes and dreams of the future into the heavens in hopes that they are answered. However, this is not the only use. As you can see from the video, the launch of sky lanterns into the night sky is simply breathtaking and watching them float away is an incredibly relaxing experience as well. For new years, they are an excellent alternative to fireworks, offering a different type of beauty with an accompaniment of silence rather than loud noise.

In the HSBC lantern advert, the characters are shown using paint to mark their Chinese Hanging Lanterns . This is absolutely something that works and works well. Rather than a message, pictures can be painted on a sky lantern in as much detail as the would-be artist wishes to give and as they float away; the picture will be visible for many to see. If waiting for paint to dry is not something you are interested in though, sharpie marker pens work just as well on the paper surface of the floating lanterns. In fact, they can be added to any order at NightSkyLanterns.co.uk as well as disposable LED Tea Lights so you can order a complete package that is ready to go whenever you are. Decide on an evening trip to launch them, grab the box from us and go.

We applaud HSBC’s use of sky lanterns in their advertisement and further applaud their responsible and accurate usage of them as well. There are only a few adverts which show sky lanterns and this is perhaps the most focused on our favourite product.
