The famous and every popular Reading Festival is upon us today through Sunday. It is the oldest on-going popular music festival in the world and each year hundreds of thousands of people attend the festival and enjoy the weekend camping and making new friends in between their favourite musical acts. This year, however, those who actually got tickets to the Reading Festival and are intending to go should take note that this festival does not allow sky lanterns.

While this is unfortunate, there are still options for the lover of sky lanterns and/or for the festival goer who believes they are as much a part of the festival experience as camping is. We do not suggest you try to sneak in Chinese lanterns, as they most likely will be confiscated at the gate and if not, could lead to you being banished, without a refund, of course. Instead, we offer these suggestions.

Many people who camp at the Reading Festival will have their cars parked miles away in one of the car parks. If it is safe to do so, launching floating lanterns from the car park can get the sky lantern experience to the festival. If the winds are right, the lanterns can float up and right over the festival and all the festival goers can enjoy sky lanterns without worrying about missing the rest of the festival over launching them.

For the person who was unable to secure tickets to the sold out Reading Festival, a sky lantern launch from across the river from the festival would be a great way to possibly sneak in some of the music from the festival as well as a great launch spot for sky lanterns. Not only a safe launch point, the fun and merry making associated with the launch can be used to taunt the festival goers on the other side of the river who can’t have sky lanterns. It may be mean, but it’s all in good fun and your sky lantern launch will entertain the crowd, especially if you time the launch to go between bands while people are milling about from one stage to another.

Sky Lanterns are fun and safe when used properly. However, Reading festival’s policy towards them is understandable for a festival that large. Previous years when they were allowed saw irresponsible use as well as poor quality products that has never sold, nor ever will. In a festival environment, our lanterns can be used safely because they are equipped with non-drip fuel cells and are made of quality products and with stringent quality controls. However, our competition cannot claim these things and these lanterns can be dangerous when launched around a large crowd. From paraffin wax dripping onto other festival goers to the lanterns simply falling apart, low-grade lanterns are sold far too often. If Reading Festival goers wish to change the policy, is happy to work with the festival to ensure a balance of safety and fun with floating lanterns.
