Today in Sandwich, the annual St. Bartholomew’s Bun Race is going on. This fun day of festivities has children run a lap around St. Bart’s church and in kind, they are rewarded with currant bun. Adults who participate are rewarded as well, being given a biscuit, marked especially for the day’s celebration with the date of 1190 as well as the arms of Sandwich. In times past, festivities were more lavish with beer, cheese and bread given out rather than the mere biscuit. For those in Sandwich and for those who wish they could be there, celebrating the end of this fun day with sky lanterns couldn’t be more perfect.

History of St. Bartholomew’s Bun Race

The history of St. Bartholomew’s Bun Race indicates that this festival day is a way to gloat over a key ship victory in the 1200’s against the French. On this day in 1217, English ships managed to capture a number of French vessels with supplies destined for Louis of France’s armies which were advancing on London at the time. Cutting off these ships from their destination was a major blow to the French army and the money pillaged from the ships was used to found what now is St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, which still exists to this day and still house 16 people known as the brothers and sisters of the hospital to signify the 16 ships which raided the French supply lines.

How do Sky Lanterns Fit In Today?

Sky Lanterns are a fun way to celebrate any occasion but an occasion such as this where it is a military victory which is being celebrated makes sky lanterns all that more perfect. Historically, one of the many uses of sky lanterns was as part of war. The Chinese discovered Chinese Hanging Lanterns quite a while ago and used them in many facets of war. From sending up prayers of success in a coming campaign, to being used quite effectively as a battlefield communication tool, to a way to celebrate a victory, the paper lantern had as many wartime as it did peace time uses in ancient China.

Because of the rich war-time tradition behind sky lanterns, an evening launch tonight would be an excellent way to end the festivities of the day. The launch of our traditional sky lanterns can be done with many colours of floating lanterns and can easy be purchased in the colours to match Sandwich’s traditional colours (except the Mayor’s Black robes). With the right breeze, the floating lanterns could even float out to sea, as the sails of a different time would use the same breeze to set sail to their intended destination. The floating Chinese Hanging Lanterns will touch down in the ocean and because of their environmentally safe design, will cause no problems to the ocean eco system where they land.
