Whether you can make the drive to Kettlewell for their Scarecrow festival this week or simply enjoy the idea of this novel fundraiser, sky lanterns can be part of the fun of this festival. The festival itself runs all week and is wholly appropriate for children of all ages, as well as adults who enjoy the festive atmosphere of Kettlewell and the response each year is a larger and larger crowd of people trying to get to see all the interesting scarecrows that Kettlewell has to offer. The evenings are a chance to relax though and those that stay or camp nearby have farms all around, perfect for launching floating lanterns and watching them float off.

History of the Kettlewell’s Scarecrow Festival

Kettlewell’s first Scarecrow festival was held in 1994 and was done to raise funds for a local school. This school is the primary school for many of the remote farms, villages and hamlets of Upper Wharfedale and the response to the fundraiser was nothing short of stellar. Parents and residents of the area put up more than one hundred scarecrows for the original fundraiser and the subsequent years have seen a growing enthusiasm and creativity that draws visitors. Since 1998, the funds have gone to the parish church as well as the school and the event is organized by a small committee that is made up of church members as well as Kettlewell Village Hall members. The townspeople contribute their time in renovating and making new scarecrows as well as profit from selling produce and foods to the visitors as well as having boarders and campers use their property during the festival. Here at NightSkyLanterns.co.uk, we salute Kettlewell for putting on such an event year after year and doing so in such an enthusiastic manner.

What to Do During the Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival

The Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival’s primary feature is a Scarecrow trail. You purchase a trail sheet and follow the trail both for the story and fun of the theme but also to try to find all the scarecrows (some are hidden!) and solve the riddles. There are themes and sheets for adults and children and prizes are given out daily for those who solve the riddle. There are car tours as well and tearooms serving food daily. In the evening, the tourists typically camp or spend the night in one of the hostelries in the area. For those who choose to stay, the fun of sky lanterns is a great way to end the day. Floating up into the sky, these delicate Chinese Hanging Lanterns are beautiful and relaxing. When the fuel cell extinguishes itself, the lantern slowly floats to the ground, with danger of catching a scarecrow or farm on fire and because all of NightSkyLantern.co.uk’s lanterns are wire free, there is no danger to livestock or wildlife either. With such a great festival and great cause associated with it, the addition of sky lanterns in the evening hours is a perfect way to end the day’s festivities.
