Today marks the start of Cowes Week that runs from today through 07 August. Cowes week is a long standing tradition in the UK. It started in 1826 and has been going strong ever since. It is one of the country’s longest running and most successful sporting events in its history. Between the incredible sailing displays and social events everyone who is in attendance is sure to have an incredible time. Over 100,000 people watch or attend the festivities. Over 8,500 people compete in the events and there is a wide range of contestants from weekend sailors to seasoned professionals and Olympic champions. This year’s Cowes week promises to exceed previous years in excitement. Cowes Week is the perfect time to incorporate Chinese lanterns into the festivities.

A grand tradition of Cowes Week improved with sky lanterns

Cowes Week is a grand event that lasts eight days. Of course there is sailing. In fact 8,500 people race in the regatta daily during Cowes Week. You will see over 1,000 boats and incredible exhibitions of skill and determination as the contestants participate in the events during Cowes Week. But racing is not all that occurs during Cowes Week. Clubs, bars, pubs and restaurants throughout the area have fun activities. Plus along the beach there are open air activities, carnivals and street entertainment to amuse everyone. Adding Chinese lanterns is a great way to kick off the event and have a fun time every evening during the week. Traditional sky lanterns lend a more formal look to the event or you can use the coloured sky lanterns for even more flash. Watching the Chinese lanterns as the float across the night sky is a great way to help add to the festive air of Cowes Week.

Safety first when launching Chinese lanterns during Cowes Week

Keep in mind that Cowes Week is very busy and there are a lot of boats in the marina during this time. You want to make sure to adhere to all safety precautions for launching Chinese lanterns during Cowes Week. For example, you may want to contact the harbour master to inform him of launching the Chinese lanterns. This way they will know not to mistake the launching of the lanterns as possible distress signals from a boat. Also, make sure you only launch when the weather is clear and still. Reviewing the safety precautions and adhering to them will ensure everyone has a great time with Chinese lanterns during Cowes Week.

Cowes week is a time honoured sporting tradition in the UK. Chinese lanterns are also rich in tradition. Why not combine the tow for an even more exciting week of festivities? Using Chinese lanterns is fun and safe. Plus, because we now only use wire free Chinese lanterns they are also better for the environment. They will degrade at a much faster rate and they have no potential to harm wildlife or livestock due to small metal bits. If you are attending any of the festivities during Cowes Week, do not forget the Chinese lanterns!
