The month of July is eye safety month and this is a great time to learn about eye safety, to teach children about eye safety and to put into practice measures to ensure eye safety for life. Because Chinese lanterns emit such an incredible display in the night sky it is the ideal time to celebrate and honour the month while using the sky lanterns as great tools to help learn about them and have children express what they learned. By customising the Chinese lanterns with eye care tips and discussing safety precautions for using Chinese lanterns, it is a fun and practical way to emphasise the importance of safety during July, the time it is best to learn about it.

Learn about eye safety first

This is a great time to do some research on the Internet with your children about the best ways to ensure your eyes are healthy. This will include proper health of the eye, regular check ups to ensure great vision and safety precautions. You should discuss as many of these issues with your children as possible and have discussions to ensure they understand. Once they have a good understanding of how to protect their eyes during the course of the day and how to maintain their vision health, you may want to incorporate Chinese lanterns to add a fun element to a learning experience. All you need are some Chinese lanterns, a sharpie marker and some time.

Customise your Chinese lanterns to eye safety tips

Children will have a great time customising the Chinese lanterns by using sharpie markers to draw or write on them. The coloured Chinese lanterns such as the ones found at are perfect for this. Make sure to supervise carefully so that you don’t have marker anywhere other than on the Chinese lanterns. However, this is a great time to add a fun element to the education while emphasising what the children have learned. Have them draw pictures of how to encourage eye safety. For older children they can either draw or write tips or even write a short story or poem to really get creative. Once the Chinese lanterns are ready to go and are completely eye safety customised, you can then discuss launching them and safety precautions as it pertains to eyes before setting them off in the night sky.

Chinese lantern safety and fun

Now is the time to go over the specifics of Chinese lantern safety with the children. You can find the valuable tips at Emphasise the tips that tie in to eye safety. Then you can get ready to release the Chinese lanterns into the night sky in celebration of Eye Safety Month. You can watch them drift into the sky. On a clear evening, the Chinese lanterns can be seen for many kilometres. You can make a game of seeing how long you can watch the glow before you can no longer see it or before the Chinese lanterns burn out and fall to the ground.
